Animal Welfare
Priority at Michell
The Alpaca welfare is a priority at Michell. Through our Farm, we are conducting a series of workshops that are training and helping Alpaca breeders and communities to improve the wellbeing of the alpacas in the Peruvian Highlands.
Our Farm was established back in 1995 in the Azangaro Province of the Puno Region. Since then we have been focusing on improving the alpaca welfare to breeding practices.
Alpaca breeding goes back to Inca times and since the breeders income depend on the animals and their fiber. Thus, they handle their alpaca herds with care and respect.
Nevertheless we are focusing on the following aspects that will ensure the alpaca welfare and sustainability of the alpaca value chain:
1Encourage free range and comfort. We promote an extensive type of breeding rather than intensive, in order for alpacas to have the necessary space to move freely and find natural grasses. We promote the use of corrals, where no natural shelters are available, to provide a safe (against predators) and comfort areas for resting during the night. Also we promote the use of shelters or sheds to cope with harsh weather conditions such as freezing temperatures or snow.

2Provide access to grasses and water. We recommend the breeding of alpacas to be practiced in areas that have access to natural grasses and source of water. These areas in the Peruvian highlands are known as moorlands, which have both grasses and fresh water year round.

3Promote good health. We promote the management of the alpaca health aspects, which includes monitoring of the animals to prevent diseases, use of vaccinations, and treatment of animals that are ill or sick. That way we can prevent, cope and control any diseases.

4Practice a careful fiber shearing. We are promoting our Shearing Practices, which ensure the welfare of the animal and the team of shearers. The shearing differentiate from other shearing techniques by using a bed with a cushion, where we lay the alpaca, instead of laying the alpaca on the floor or any hard surface. Then, we tie carefully the legs to avoid any injuries for both the animal and shearer. We proceed with the shearing with mechanical clippers over the bed, and thanks to its height, the shearer is not in a bent position(which likely cause waist pain to the shearers). Finally the bed also allows a faster and safer shearing process.
